Give Fear the Finger

August is the start of my new year. Yep...it's my birthday month. Shout out to all the Leos out there...whoot! whoot! I'm turning 42 and to shift gears, I've decided to honor my connection to you by finding 42 ways to give fear the finger. Starting with this poem.

"I honor the place within you where the entire Universe resides.
I honor the place within you of love, of light, of truth, of peace.
I honor the place within you where if you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us."

There are several versions of this poem by an unknown author. It's been attributed to Buddha, Ram Dass, and general Zen teachings. This version is my favorite.

2016 has been a rough year for a lot of people, for this country, for this planet. Terrible events have unfolded and the fear mongers have been slinging the $hit pretty hard. It's been difficult to avoid getting hit. The media uses sensationalism to draw you in. It pushes all of the high alert/act now buttons in your brain. So it really is a rather unfair fight. But, I want you to remember this.Sensationalism is the silly cousin of Fear. Fear is divisive, but listening...listening intently and deeply can bring us together.

If you find that you truly can't pull away from the news broadcast or the side ways post on social media...try turning the experience into a Practice. Study the sensationalism, the exaggerations, the hyperbole, etc and mindfully begin to separate the facts from the flash. When you pull out all of the hype, what did they really say? This person was hurting. This person was misunderstood. This person was afraid. This person felt truly alone in this world. In Yoga, when we study our senses and the effects external influences may or may not have on our state of being...we call this Pratyahara.

So how does this relate to my celebrating my connection to you? Well, take a moment to think about how you came to receive this newsletter. Maybe we have met. Maybe a friend brought you to an event at Bija. Maybe you read a post on Facebook or an article in the newspaper. There is a connection...and however ever small it may seem. That's all it takes. We are linked.

Now think about all of the tiny choices you've made that have drawn other people into your life. Every connection leads to another connection. It's never ending.

There is a chain of light, of love, of truth, and peace that begins with you. If you can find that space within you...every single person you connect with will have a way back home, too.

So this month, honor your connections...own the light within and see it in those around you. Sit next to the man on the park bench and find out what his story is. Chat up the person next to you on the train. Do things that bring you closer to your neighbors rather than isolate. Isolation is the mother of Fear. If we stick together, fear can't take up residence. There simply wouldn't be enough room ;-)
